Teacher: Dr. Rebecca Herman

office phone: 512-414-7417 in Library (no classroom phone)

The goal of this class is to cultivate in each student a lifelong love of music while continually raising the standards of excellence through common goals, unified efforts, mutual respect, and a tradition of success through mastering content laid out in the TEKS.

Materials needed:

  • Textbook: Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano Course, Level 1
  • Pencil, eraser, and interactive notebook.
  • Handouts and sheet music.

  • Students are expected to be on time to class with appropriate materials.
  • Students are expected to practice a minimum of 1 hour a week outside of class.  Students may practice in room 210 South (the piano lab) outside of class with Mr. Gottschall’s permission.  *Students may check out books to practice outside of class provided they return the books the next class day.
  • Students are expected to prepare and perform a piece for the Winter Recital on Tuesday, December 6, 2016. There will also be a Spring Recital on Tuesday, May 16, 2017.
  • Students are expected to learn basic music theory.

  • Daily Participation Grades, quiz grades, and homework: 75% of each report card grade
    • Weekly playing grades (quiz grades) are based on students’ preparation and ability to perform assigned selections of music.
    • Daily grades are based on participation- being on time, with materials, and proper classroom behavior, participation, and homework. (Cell phone use is prohibited in accordance with Austin ISD policy).
    • Make-up grades: If students are absent, they can make-up a test or homework for full credit, except for recitals. If students fail a test, they can take a make-up test for a maximum of 70%. Students may have up to three days late to make up missing work. Each day late for unexcused lateness will subtract 10% from the maximum grade.
  • Major exam grades - Each 6 weeks will have a written music theory exam: 25% of each report card grade. Semester Recital: counts for one major grade of 25%.
  • Final Semester exam on music theory: 25% of semester grade

  • Major performance grade is based on attendance, performance, and attire at the Winter Recital on Tuesday, Tuesday, December 6, 2016 and the Spring Recital on Tuesday, May 16, 2017.
